Basic Grooming done to keep pups clean & adorable while preparing them for future grooming practices
Yes, They are expensive to the average person just looking to purchase a family pet. To the Portuguese Water Dog Owner, they are priceless. Most Portie owners end up with two or more of these amazing dogs, because 2 is always better then 1.
Average Cost: The cost of a PWD averages about $2,500 - $4,500 depending on region. The cost of a PWD is high because there are many expensive health tests that PWDs undergo before they should be used in any breeding program, such as: breeding expenses, including puppy health checks, vaccinations, micro-chip, dew claw removal and more. The availability of these tests, however, help assure that you are getting a puppy that will not have severe health issues in the future. Our Sire & Dam have been cleared for tests: GM1, EOPRA & Improper Coat. Sire & Dam have both been tested using Embark, which is a DNA panel of over 175 other tests that give you a full spectrum of each dog.
Beware--certifications come with these tests. Ask for copies from breeders BEFORE you get your puppy.
ACK Pedigree can be checked on OFA website where the health testing is validated and published. You can also check the testing of other dogs within the pedigree for further research.
Lastly, Portuguese Water Dogs are not saturated, as the breed wasn't introduced to the United States until the 1960's and because of high level protection of this breed, there are not as many breeders for this breed compared to others.
No matter where you choose to purchase your lifelong friend, be sure to validate your pup's health, read the contract, and make sure the Portuguese Water Dog is the right fit for your home!!
We hope you love them as much as we do!
